The Emergent Church – a dangerous movement

Mondays, 7:00 –8:30 pm beginning January 25, 2010
13 weeks, final class April 26, 2010
Instructor:   Jake Auxier, Room D212

The Emerging/Emergent Church movement claims an admirable goal of reaching people in a postmodern culture for Jesus Christ.  Focusing on the postmodern culture will necessarily include a focus on young adults, but this movement does attract people from every age.  When one looks closer into the movement, though, one sees a troubling and alarming trend where orthodox Christian theology takes a backseat or is abandoned all together to achieve this goal.  This class will look into the movement.  It will briefly explore its history, and it will investigate the philosophical and theological underpinnings of the movement checking them against orthodox Christian theology and philosophy with the Word of God as the source.  Also we will explore the question of reaching the postmodern culture without abandoning the Truth that is the Word of God.  At the end of the semester, a student will have a better understanding of the movement: its philosophy and theology.  The student will also gain a greater understanding of orthodox Christian theology and philosophy, and the student will be equipped to use that understanding to check other "new" church movements that arise.  Hopefully, the student will also get some basics of how the Church can reach people for Jesus Christ in a postmodern culture that does not abandon the Word of God.

The Book of Romans

Thursdays in Melbourne, beginning January 28, 2010, 7:00 – 8:45 pm
(final class April 29)
Instructor:  Steve Slesinger, Room C323

Simply put, Romans is one of the greatest books of the Bible.  Paul lays out Bible doctrine for some of the most important foundational truths:  sin, judgment, law, grace, faith, works, justification, sanctification and glorification.  (He also discusses God’s plans for the nation of Israel).  We will study this amazing book, verse by verse, and the students will grow their faith through interesting homework questions.

The Gospel of John

Tuesdays in Melbourne, beginning Feb 9, 2010, 7:00 – 8:30  pm
Thursday in Viera, beginning Feb 11, 2010, 7:00 – 8:30 pm
13 weeks (ends first week of May)
Instructor:  Stan Linder, Room C323

The Gospel of John has long fascinated biblical scholars by its simple grammatical style and deep Christological content. The book is recognized as the unique fourth gospel that offers a portrait of the Messiah like no other book of the Bible. This course will be a verse-by-verse study of the entire gospel with emphasis on John’s Trinitarian theology, particularly, the relationship between the deity and humanity of Jesus, the Son of God.

In addition to a copy of the New King James Version or the New International Version of the Bible, each student is required to have a copy of Spiros Zodhiates’, The Complete Word Study New Testament (AMG Publishers, ISBN 0-89957-651-6) in the King James Version for reference. All reading materials are needed by the first day of class and will be used for research and reporting of assignments. If you have any questions, please call Stan Linder at 480-2488 or email him at:  stanlinder@cfl.rr.com
