Preparing the Soil (Introduction): Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 3:13-14)  Christmas is my favorite holiday, but I have to say my second favorite is New Year’s Day.  There is something to be said for one chapter of your life closing and a new one opening.  I can put aside the mistakes I have made and clear the clutter, so I can step forward into a new year full of new beginnings.  I have spoken to lots of people over the last few weeks, and 2009 was definitely a year of challenges for many of them.  Many have experienced financial strain, health issues, relationship issues, and many other trials.  Maybe you are one of those people.  Maybe you are looking at an uncertain future, and maybe you are a bit fearful.  The Good News is that we don’t have to be fearful.

Planting and Watering the Seed (Growth):  Whenever I start to experience a sense of uncertainty or fear, I read chapter 11 of Hebrews, known as the “wall of faith” chapter.  I can draw encouragement from the saints of the Bible and remember God’s faithfulness to His people.  I also sit and reflect on what God has done for me.  I try to do that every New Year’s Eve morning…sit and reflect.  Almost immediately the Lord will take my fear of what may come and bring joy to my spirit and a smile to my face, as He helps me recall all the good He has done for me.  He is faithful, and He has never failed me yet.  I need to be reminded sometimes that even though trials come and things happen that I don’t understand, God is always there with me.  He is there with you as well.  So, do not fear.

Harvesting the Crop (Action/Response):  Recently I saw some pictures that were taken by NASA from space.  They were breathtaking!  One of the pictures showed a hurricane about to make landfall on the U.S.  When I looked at the picture I was in awe at the size of the storm and the intensity of nature.  But a thought occurred to me:  God is in heaven with that same view, and He knows what is coming.  If He knows what is coming and is in control of all things, then what do I have to fear?  The storms of life will come, but God will give you and me peace and wisdom in the midst of any storm.  He will instruct us on what to do and where to turn next.  He promised that He would never leave nor forsake us (Joshua 1:5).  Jesus is the source of all wisdom, and we can go to Him whenever we wish.  He longs for us to seek Him and have a relationship with Him.  His plans for us are good (Jeremiah 29:11).  If His plans for us are good, then we need not fear what may come in our life.  Hang onto Jesus and let Him direct your steps.  Oftentimes we get in our own way, not letting Jesus work.  When we let go and let God, that is when we will see His Glory revealed.  I pray that, as you start this New Year, you add “knowing Jesus more” to your list of resolutions.  Look back at the year and learn from your mistakes, but don’t stay there.  If repentance is needed, seek it.  Either way, turn around and look to Jesus for the next step He would have you take.  He has an adventure for you.  Will you follow Him?  If you don’t know what to do, put your eyes on Jesus. He will give you wisdom.
