Hurry Sickness

Several years ago, we adopted a hound mix dog named Nubee from the local animal shelter. Nubee has a sweet disposition and her main goal in life is to spend time with her humans. She sleeps right outside our bedroom door and patiently waits each morning for the door to open. Sometimes she tries to hurry us up a little by scratching on the door, as if to say hurry up and open the door- “I’ve missed you and can’t wait to see you this morning!” When we finally open the door, she wags her tail with so much excitement that her whole body wiggles. I delight in watching her excitement whenever she greets us after we have been apart for a while.

The Lord delights in each of us when we start our day by spending time in fellowship with Him. He patiently waits at the door of our heart for us to come and sit with Him. There are times when we all are afflicted with hurry sickness and instead of prioritizing our time to put God first, we try to squeeze Him into our schedule, or just cut our quiet time altogether. Cutting our time with God usually works to our detriment. When one gets ahead of God and starts making decisions without seeking God’s perspective, it can produce undesirable, or even disastrous results. That’s why it’s important to examine ourselves daily. Start with what happened yesterday. Ask yourself, “How did I handle myself in a particular situation? What opportunities did I miss? Did I glorify God in my thoughts and actions? Lord, are there is any unconfessed sin in my life?” Journaling is a great way to help one grow in their walk with the Lord.

When we keep a written record, it reminds us of where we started and how far we have come in our walk with the Lord. Spiritual growth strengthens our faith and strong faith is pleasing to the Lord. A closer walk with the Lord is my personal goal. I want Him to delight in my excitement and zeal for Him. I know one day I will meet Him face to face and when that door is opened, I want to greet Him as an old friend with that Nubee like excitement!
