Have you ever caught yourself acting agitated for no reason? Someone asks you a question and you give them a gruff retort with downward pointing eyebrows and a tinge of attitude. Perhaps it comes from utter concentration on the tasks of the day that we’re all busily ticking off, but it’s almost as if the grumpy cat look is the default setting for our face and tone of voice. Especially with those close around us we get into a sort of familiar, no nonsense rut, and it’s really a shame. We do live in a dark world with many unsettling situations all around us, but isn’t that more reason to celebrate the simple joys of the day?
I remember lying in a hospital bed in my early 20’s with a pretty serious, life altering diagnosis hanging over my head. As I watched all the feet of “healthy” people walk in and then out of my hospital room, seemingly without a care in the world, I remember feeling envious of their carefree lives. I couldn’t leave the bed, but they could walk right out into the open world and do whatever they pleased. It was then that I decided to try my best to appreciate the regular days, should they come again.
If this is a difficult day for you for any reason, I pray you would be able to lay your burden down before Jesus and take up the rest that only He can offer (Matthew 11:28). Allow His peace that passes all understanding to come around you to guard your heart and mind from the unanswered questions, fears and pain (Philippians 4:6-7). May the hope of Heaven be that anchor for your soul and allow you to enter the throne room of Jesus and keep you safe until the storm is past (Hebrews 6:19).
For the rest of us who woke up to a regular day, what a glorious regular day it is! As a matter of fact, the Lord has made this day, so let’s rejoice and be glad in it! We are children of The God Almighty! The victory dance, the victory stance, it’s all ours in Jesus. With the choir of Heaven singing in our ears and the joy of the Lord all over our face, let’s do that laundry, and pay those bills. Let’s lean in and be attentive during that afternoon business meeting, find a reason to laugh with some teenagers, and smile at our family! We are alive in Christ! We are free for freedom’s sake! These are reasons to joyfully light up someone’s day beside us and whistle while we work. Hallelujah! Praise be to Jesus!
