Change Your Default!

The Red Sea before them; the mountains on either side of them; the Egyptians coming up behind them—if ever there was a time of fear in the lives of the Israelites, it was now (Exodus 14:9-10). They had seen God pour out the plagues on the Egyptians—without any of them affecting themselves! They had seen Almighty God change the hardened heart of the most powerful man on earth and cause Pharaoh to let His people go. Now, between a rock and a hard place, they became fearful and fear gave way to doubt, hopelessness and even anger (Exodus 14:12).

Most of us have experienced our own “between a rock and a hard place” situations. We must recognize that our adversary, Satan, knows well our weaknesses, and knows how fear, unchecked, renders us powerless. Christ followers beware! Spiritual warfare is very personal, and it is ongoing. Even when we are not facing our Red Sea, Satan is working overtime to bring us down. That’s the sobering bad news.

The empowering good news is that we are promised victory over fear (Isaiah 41:10). The same God that delivered Moses and the Israelites at the Red Sea is the same God that empowers us against Satan (Joshua 1:5). Scripture tells us that God. is faithful and has never failed to keep His promises (Joshua 23:14), (2 Corinthians 1:20) God’s promises hold firm for every situation and every need that we have.

Because we are human, fear is often our default setting when we are faced with trials. Christ followers, we need to change our default and replace fear with faith in God. How do we do this?

Go to the Source. Recognize that dedicated daily prayer is our lifeline to God. Short intercessions throughout the day help to maintain that lifeline.
Read His Word. Know His Word.
Memorize verses that help you in your weaknesses.
Speak those verses to the enemy and he must flee! (James 4:7)

Remember, victory in spiritual warfare does not come in our own strength, but together with Him we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) To paraphrase the ancient Chinese warrior, Sun Tzu, “If you know your enemy and you know your God, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” God has given us the victory. Let your faith in His faithfulness overcome all fear!
