I was driving with the radio on and it was in between songs. Of course, there was the same old commercials that we try to tune out. I was fairly successful because I hardly noticed anything they were trying to sell me until a Diamond Store cut through all the fuzz, and my brain snapped to attention. Somewhere in all the marriage proposals and anniversary remembrances, I heard this store tag line: "Buy a piece of eternity"!!! It hit me like a cold slap to the face. They finally did it! They're selling eternity!
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God." The disciples said," Who then can be saved?" Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." (Mark 10:23-27)
Can we buy eternity by our deeds or our offerings? Some think so. Certain religions would have people believe that you can only achieve salvation by your good works and by how much you give (Ephesians 2:8-9). Is it impossible for a rich man to enter heaven? No. But money cannot be his God! Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:15,17)
We should be satisfied with fulfilling our needs, NOT chasing after all our wants. But if we have food and clothing, we can be content with that. Those who want to get rich often fall into temptation and a trap. Many foolish and harmful desires plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evil. (1 Timothy 6:8-10) As Pastor Mark says, ‘Love God – Love people.’ Let’s NOT fall into the mirage of loving money!
