Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young (1 Timothy 4:12). Ah, youth. So many of us came to Christ as teenagers. It was such a pivotal time in our lives, a time of learning, of growth, and a time of passion and of hope. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:26-27)
I came to Jesus as a boy of 13 and I followed Him faithfully and passionately for 3-4 years, that is, until the siren song of the world started singing louder and more seductively, slowly pulling me away from the “Lamb of God.” I started listening to the lure of the world! Unfortunately, there’s still so much for young Christ followers to learn and at such a crucial time (2 Timothy 1:14).
At 18, I was the singer in my first rock band, playing in bars and drinking legally. In South Florida 1974, the drinking age was 18. At 21, I was singing in my band at the world-famous club, The Whisky a Go-Go, in Hollywood, California, and giving way to every twisted impulse I had. Instead of living “The Way, the Truth and the Life,” it was, “Sex, drugs and rock and roll,” 24/7.
Set on a rebellious, prodigal path, I sang at the wedding of my current wife, some 34 years prior to OUR marriage. My first, ill-conceived wedding was to a then infamous adult film star. As Pastor Mark often says, ‘Temptation is tempting (or we wouldn’t do it), but Satan hides us from the coming disastrous consequences. With more lessons from God, which took me on a long and rocky road, He finally led me back into the forgiving arms of my loving Lord and Savior, who NEVER gave up on me! He brought me back to the love of my life, now married and together, HERE, where we are both joyfully serving Him. He IS faithful! Don’t fall into the trap the enemy sets out for you, but if you do, call on Him! Jesus will help you get back on the glorious road with Him (Philippians 4:4)!
