Living with a Pilgrim Mentality

Mark Balmer - Sunday, January 6th 2019 - Hebrews 11

Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV) For as he thinks in his heart, so is he….

  • What we think we become

Hebrews 11:13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers (pilgrims) on earth.

  • Pilgrims= aliens, strangers, temporary residents on earth
  • Know you are a pilgrim
  • We are all pilgrims, temporary residents in transit on our way to our Heaven, our final destination

1 Peter 2:11-12 (NLT) Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

  • Think and Live like YOU are a pilgrim
  • Christ Followers (CFs) see life from God’s point of view (an eternal perspective)
  • Unbelievers live with a different perspective (here and now)

1)  Pilgrims use their time wisely

Psalms 39:4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.

  • 1st regret - I would have reflected more on my life
  • 2nd regret - I would have lived a life filled with purpose and fulfillment
  • 3rd regret - I would have taken more risks

2)  Pilgrims spend time alone with God to refocus and be refreshed

Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

  • Journaling – the daily process of examining and evaluating my life in written form. (1) Evaluate yesterday (2) Read the WORD with application, (3) Pray to God and Listen to God

John 12:26 (NLT) Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

  • Life is not JUST about WHERE we are going but WHO we are going with

3) Pilgrims know how to defeat sinful desires

1 Peter 2:11 (NLT) Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

Galatians 5:16-17 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

Galatians 5:19-21a (NLT)  When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these…..

  • Temptation #1   The bait
  • Temptation #2   The struggle
  • Temptation #3   MY decision

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

  • Every CF has the power to say NO to temptation and sin

Romans 6:6-7 (NLT) We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.

1 Peter 2:12 Live such good lives among the pagans (unbelievers) that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see (observe) your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  • People are watching; live good lives and unbelievers will see God is good!

4)  Pilgrims know God’s priorities and keep them

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Psalms 84:5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.

  • Life is not JUST about WHERE we are going but WHO we are going with
