Successful Ministry that Pleases God
Mark Balmer - Sunday, February 10th 2019 - 1 Thessalonians 2:1-9
- ALL Christ Followers (CFs) are called to be ministers who serve others
Ephesians 4:11-12 (HCSB) And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints (every CF) in the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ
1 Thessalonians 2:1 You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure.
- The world says that success is found in power, position, possessions, pleasure and material wealth,
- But God defines success very different!
Joshua 1:8 (NLT) Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
- 1. Spiritual success is finding God’s will for our lives and doing it.
1 Thessalonians 2:2 We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know….
1 Thessalonians 2:2 (NLT) …. Yet our God gave us the courage to declare his Good News to you boldly, in spite of great opposition.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
- 2. Spiritual success is having courage and boldness to share the gospel, regardless
2 Timothy 1:7-8 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God
Matthew 7:15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
1 Thessalonians 2:3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.
- God not only cares about what we do but why we do it.
Proverbs 16:2 (NLT) People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives
Matthew 6:1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 Corinthians 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
1 Thessalonians 2:4 (NLT) For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrustedwith the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts.
- Every CF is a manager trusted with the treasure of the good news
Acts 4:8-12 (summary) ….man healed, many people coming to salvation when they heard the gospel. The religious Jews didn’t want to hear anything about Jesus.
Acts 4:8-12 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’[a] 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:19-20 But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? 20 We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”
- 3. Spiritual success is living a lifestyle that pleases God not man
1 Thessalonians 2:5 (NLT) Never once did we try to win you with flattery, as you well know. And God is our witness that we were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money
1 Thessalonians 2:6We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else. As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you
- 4. Spiritual success: Our motives are pure, our words true and our lifestyle is real
1 Thessalonians 2:7-9 but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. 8 We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. 9 Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.
John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Romans 12:1 (MSG) So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.
- 5. Spiritual success – we are to give our lives to God and enjoy loving Him and serving others
