Following the Leading of the Holy Spirit

Mark Balmer - Sunday, May 19th 2019 - 1 Thessalonians 5:19-28

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;

Matthew 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  • Fire = the Holy Spirit (HS) enables and energizes us to do the will of God

2 Timothy 1:6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

  • We can quench the Holy Spirit by simple neglect

Colossians 1:6 ….All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth.

Zechariah 4:6 So he said to me, "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.

  • We can quench the Holy Spirit by ignoring the Holy Spirit’s wisdom

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

  • We can quench the Holy Spirit by refusing to worship God through Christian music (especially in church)

Ephesians 5:18-19 (NLT) Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.

  • We can quench the HS by saying NO – the sin of disobedience

Ezekiel 36:27 (NLT) And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.

1 Thessalonians 5:20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.

  • We can quench the HS by limiting His gifts

1 Corinthians 14:39-40 (NLT) So, my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid (keep away from) every kind of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Romans 12:17-19 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

Proverbs 4:23-27 (NLT) Guard your heart above all else,  for it determines the course of your life. 24 Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. 25 Look straight ahead and fix your eyes on what lies before you. 26 Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. 27 Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Sanctification is the process whereby a person is set apart to be used by God
  • The spirit is that part that relates to God.  It is the REAL me that will live forever.
  • The soul is my mind, will and emotions – my desires
  • The body is my flesh, the temporary tent - the 5 senses and motor responses.

1 Thessalonians 5:24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:25-26 Brothers pray for us. 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

1 Thessalonians 5:27 (NLT) I command you in the name of the Lord to read this letter (out loud) to all the brothers and sisters

1 Thessalonians 5:28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

  • HS: I am ready and willing to follow wherever you lead

John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
