God's Masterpiece

“For we are God’s Masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
If you are following Jesus, you are a one-of-a-kind masterpiece created by God. But it's not because of your appearance, your talents, or anything you have done. We are God's masterpiece because His grace has transformed us into the image of His Son. As His masterpiece, God wants to "put us on display" so we can reflect the beauty and image of Jesus to others!
When I was an art teacher, I taught my students an art term called Pentimento. It is used to describe painting over previous artwork and making something new. In a way, that's what God’s grace did for us. He "painted" over the old imperfect us, which transformed us into a new masterpiece. Like a newly restored painting, some of us look so different, the people from our past may struggle to recognize us.
But when artists use this Pentimento technique, over time, the remnants of the older image can become visible. The best way to prevent deterioration of valuable artwork is through regular cleaning and maintenance. As Christ followers, we must maintain ourselves in a similar way spiritually. Scripture says we maintain ourselves by the regular "washing" of God's Word.
But don't forget, Satan is out to kill, steal, and destroy God's masterpieces. He will try everything in his power to bring that old image of us back to the surface. But our God is the ultimate restorer! If any flaws in His masterpieces surface, He will "overpaint" our mistakes with the image of His Son! Though our image is transformed, God is still able to use our past (our old image) to help others change.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
That art term we learned earlier (Pentimento) comes from an Italian word that means "to repent." When we repent and ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, God cleanses us from our past, present, and future sins. But God doesn't just cover up imperfect pictures like a human artist would, when God paints a masterpiece (us), He isn't just restoring it, He's making it brand new!
