“Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21 (NLT)
My husband and I have been married for over 30 years, but over the last few years we’ve started downsizing. We've decided to get rid of a lot of our "stuff" to make life simpler. Things that once seemed important or valuable don’t seem valuable anymore. However, some things (like our photos) are still very important. Now, Christ is our biggest treasure! We may not always realize it, but the moment we fully surrendered our lives to Jesus, we gained the most important treasure in the world.
...all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19
After the shepherds saw the newborn Savior, they spread the word about Jesus' birth. The shepherds were so excited, they began to tell people what the angels said about Jesus. But Mary took it a step further... As Luke 2:19 says, she "treasured" these things in her heart and thought about them often. Going to church regularly and hearing God's Word, reading my bible, and spending time in prayer is my spiritual treasure! It's the treasure I most desire and it's what I place the greatest value on. Some people put all their efforts into hunting for the world's treasures, but how much more valuable is a personal relationship with God? Can we even put a price on God's heavenly treasure?
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 1 John 2:15 (NLT)
Are you treasuring God's voice as he speaks to you? Do you treasure your personal time with the Lord? When the Holy Spirit enlightens you with God's wisdom, do you ponder on it like Mary? As we hear the Word, we must apply it to our own lives and treasure it. But if we're not obeying God's commands, our hearts will eventually become calloused. If we're not in a personal relationship with God, we may not recognize all the ways He is blessing us.
Remembering how good God has been to us is a great way to "store up treasure" in Heaven. Consider writing down the many times and the many ways God has answered your prayers. As you "treasure" those moments, be sure to give God all the glory! Your history with God is a gift, and it's an eternal treasure worth keeping!
