Building Foundations

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (NKJV)

Two years ago, my husband and I were doing major renovations to our house along with adding a pool. If you have ever done construction work within your home, you know there is a lot that goes into it. So many decisions had to be made on things I had never even thought of before. One thing was certain, my husband and I both said that we wanted our house to be a place where our teens felt comfortable enough to bring their friends over for years to come. This past spring break, it was definitely "that house" for all their friends.

Raising teens in this generation is difficult, to say the least. They come to you with so many questions, worries, and the challenges of life they are going through. As hard as those questions are, and as worried as those questions make you, I continually go back to our opening verse to remind myself to teach them, talk with them, walk with them, and to build our home on the Word of God.

As parents, grandparents, aunts, or uncles, it is our responsibility to live out loving God with all our heart, soul, and strength. In doing so, our children, teens, and adult children can see Christ’s love for them and what having a relationship with Christ is all about. Just as my husband and I had to lay a solid foundation for our homes addition before we could build upon it, we must help our children build their solid foundation as well.

"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25
