Hear Me, God

Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! Psalm 27:7 (NLT)

Each morning in my quiet time, I pray for different people and over different situations. I also pray for my family, my marriage, and myself. My prayers may be for protection, healing, understanding, or for clarity in a situation. But every now and then, I catch myself praying for trivial and selfish things.

More often than not, I've noticed those prayers that come from a place of self and selfishness are either not answered the way that I wanted, or not at all. Why? Because my heart was not in the right place, I was asking God for something not in His character or for something not in His will. That is a very dangerous place to be... When I recognize this, I would love to tell you that I immediately repent on my own. But since this is a devotion meant to help others and draw all of us closer to God, I cannot lie. Instead, I admit there are times when God has to step in and convict me about my inappropriate prayer requests. He corrects me to show me that what I am asking for is not pure or good.

Thank goodness we serve a forgiving and loving God that will step in and correct us! Our Heavenly Father loves His children (us) so much, He wants us to be who He created, not the sinful, prideful beings that we sometimes are. When we come to the Lord with a humble and loving posture, He hears our prayers and answers them in abundance. God does want us to come to Him and ask for the things that we need and desire, but He mainly wants us to know Him, be known by Him, and make His name known.

If you're struggling in your prayer life or think God isn’t listening, ask Him to help you in this area. God loves you, so He wants to spend this time with you! If we'll listen to Him, He will listen to us, guide us, and bless us!
