Building Our Faith

“For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our LORD Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8
The Holy Spirit prompted Peter to strongly urge us to continually build our faith. Our faith is the starting point, but Peter listed seven virtues we must add to it. We must actively pursue all seven of them because each one builds upon the one that proceeds it. When we add all seven to our faith, our spiritual growth process accelerates. We are transformed into a new creation, and our character becomes more like Christ's.
The Holy Spirit will empower our journey, but we must take the first step. How do we do that? By intentionally pursuing these spiritual qualities and incorporating them into our lives. When we add all seven, we'll understand our Father's heart better and the sacrificial love of Jesus better. With the Holy Spirit's help, we will become more effective ambassadors for Christ.
By His grace, God has given us everything we need to live like Jesus. Through our faith, we have access to God's character and His nature. Our pursuit of these virtues makes us Christ's partner in ministry, and it equips us to continue His mission. While on earth, Jesus had a crystal-clear sense of purpose: doing His Father’s will. If we call ourselves a Christ follower, we share that same calling. Like Jesus, God is calling us to always live our lives with a heavenly focus. Adding the seven virtues from 2 Peter 1:5-8 to our faith is how we do it!
