God of All Comfort

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Everybody is going through something. Everyone! You may not ever see it, or know the depth of their struggle, but it’s there. They may say they are “fine” when that’s not how they feel. Behind the plastered smile or the meek disposition, there are aches, pains, heartaches, and questions.

I have things in my life that I haven’t openly announced, but that doesn't mean they aren't difficult. As I travel down the road of life, I thank God for His faithfulness in the tough moments. I often say, "I wouldn’t wish my struggles on anyone", but on the other hand, I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.

Why would I say that? In our hardships and challenges, God ministers to us more sweetly. His mercy and grace wash over our prayers. When we confide in someone, they'll stand with us in prayer and give comfort. As 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 says, God comforts us so we can comfort others with the comfort He gave us. First, we get it, then we give it. We'll want to share it because we've experienced the peace God’s comfort brings.

The sweet love of Christ is tangibly felt when a fellow believer pauses to see the real you and connects with the Spirit of God within you... when they pray with you after listening to you. When God brings someone alongside us who has been through a similar situation, it takes our hope to a new level. Empathy and encouragement feed our soul.

"...everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken." Matthew 12:36

If everyone's life is difficult, then everyone must take responsibility for how they'll respond. God calls us to be a people of peace, a people who speak truth in love, and a people who'll take a stand for God in a perishing world. In Matthew 12, Jesus said we are responsible for every word we speak and for how we treat others. An important part of being a Christian is receiving God's comfort, then passing it on to someone else.

We can give it to others because Christ gave it all.
