Run with Perseverance

...we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-worker in proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles. Even while we were with you, we warned you that troubles would soon come—and they did, as you well know. That is why, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out whether your faith was still strong. I was afraid that the tempter had gotten the best of you and that our work had been useless.” 1 Thessalonians 3:1-5 (NLT)

I haven't run a marathon or participated in many athletic events, but I know a few people who have, and they start preparing months in advance. They may even visit the site of their race and walk or ride the route to become familiar with it. They want to be prepared for what is ahead so they can finish their race. They don't want to be discouraged or surprised, so they spend time training and preparing. Christ Followers are running a race too, and it's actually a lifelong marathon! In it, there will be twists and turns, ups and downs, and we'll experience great joy and deep sorrow. God's Word reminds us that life isn't always easy, but He promises to be with us in every moment.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20 (NLT)

I haven't been a "new disciple" for quite some time now, but this scripture has steadied me during life's moments more times than I can count. No matter how troublesome or difficult life becomes, we have a strong foundation that keeps us from being shaken, and His name is JESUS! Don't let life's hard seasons discourage your spiritual race. As you run, pace yourself through prayer and by reading God's Word.

...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1-2

Remember, you aren't running alone. Through your faith in Christ and the hope found in God's promises, you'll find the preparation, perspective, and joy to run your race and finish well.
