While We Are Waiting

But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

This verse is comforting, empowering, and reassuring. However, it's sometimes difficult to put into practice. Like many of you, I don’t always feel strong, energized, or empowered when I'm waiting. When we're seeking the peace this verse describes, it’s important to look at the difference between what God declares and what we are feeling. While we're "waiting on the Lord", here's a few things to remember:

• God's plans are perfect (Jeremiah 29:11).

• Trust God's plan, regardless of your circumstances (Proverbs 3:56).

• He will work out the details, but He'll do it His way, and in His perfect timing (Romans 8:28).

Part of our frustration with waiting lies in our inability to speed up the process. To us, it seems like we're stuck in a freeway traffic jam. Our engine is idling, but we aren't able to move forward. But we must always remember this: In the waiting, God is always working! But it may be "behind the scenes", and He may be putting things in place to answer our biggest prayers.

But perhaps the greatest thing God is working on is us! And He may be doing it while we wait! Let that sink in for a moment... We usually only perceive our immediate needs. God knows them, but He may want us to change first— things like our attitude, or our relationships with others. Maybe He's calling us to deepen our relationship with Him, or to increase our trust in Him. As we wait, let's be sure we're living intentionally for God. Trust Him! He will answer our prayers at just the right moment. These times of waiting are designed to give us a greater awareness of God's presence. As the worship song says, “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. Open the eyes of my heart. I want to see You."

How do we wait patiently so He can work in us and on us?

  1. Give your worries to Him (2 Peter 5:7).
  2. Remember His past goodness towards you (Joshua 1:5).
  3. Remember, everything is possible with God (Matthew 19:26).
  4. Don't sit still, serve God and serve others as you wait (I Peter 4:10).
  5. Develop an attitude of gratitude, it will counteract your anxiety (Isaiah 6:13).
  6. Ask people to pray for you. Lean on other Christ followers for support. (James 5:16)

While you are waiting for God to do something for you, remember the work He is doing in you may be the most important thing of all!
