Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. Exodus 17:15
How do we lean on the Lord as our banner? In Exodus, after the Israelites conquered the Amalekites, Moses built an altar to the Lord – giving Him the praise, honor, and thanksgiving for their victory.
In Psalm 60, David refers to this same banner and calls on the Lord to deliver them from their adversaries:
But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered. Psalm 60:4-5
In those verses, we see two reminders:
- If we honor, follow, and obey God, He will be our banner.
- God's banner is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to triumphantly deliver us in our battles (2 Thessalonians 3:3).
In Isaiah, the Messiah (Jesus) is prophesied to be the banner for all nations:
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. Isaiah 11:10
Isaiah 41 tells us that when we're weak, God will hold us up and sustain our life – just as a plant stake supports plants that are too weak to stay upright on their own (Isaiah 41:10).
Are the problems of life causing you to feel weak and battle-weary? Are you confused about your circumstances or wondering how to proceed successfully? Then lean on Jesus – the entirety of your being. He will sustain you and hold you up.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
If you're feeling weak physically, emotionally, or spiritually, ask God to strengthen you. His banner will lead you to victory!
