A Promise Kept

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ” Ezekiel 37:4-6

Most bible scholars believe that Ezekiel made this "dry bones" prophesy to Israel in 6th century B.C. It was necessary because the nation of Israel was dead! Many of its people were alive, but their nation was scattered throughout the world like dry bones in a desert. But as any paleontologist can tell you, reassembled bones aren't alive... the rejoined bones we see in our museums are all lifeless.

But our God can do anything! Christ follower, do you really believe this? Do you believe that God can defy the laws of physics, nature, and time? When you read God's promises do you expect them to be fulfilled in your life? It's O.K. to have doubts, but since God created our universe, He isn't bound by the laws of time, space, and nature. Therefore, when God makes a promise, He'll keep that promise, even when the completion of it sounds impossible.

The Roman army invaded Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and the Jewish Temple was destroyed. Their nation was conquered and the Israelites were scattered. Some of them survived, but their connection to their ancestral homeland was now severed. Just as Ezekiel prophesied, the nation of Israel had become dry bones!

"And I will bring my people Israel back from exile. They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; they will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.” Amos 9:14

Just as God promised, the nation of Isreal was restored. To start the process, God began speaking to them about returning to Jerusalem and rebuilding its walls. It happened in the 5th century B.C. and it happened again on May 14, 1948. With God's help, Israel was restored and it became a modern nation. The Lord kept His promise and He did something the world said was impossible. God had indeed breathed life back into the "dry bones" of His people.

Israel's restoration is a great reminder that God always keeps His promises. Therefore, we can trust Him to keep His promises to us. After all, NOTHING is impossible for our God! AMEN!
