The G.A.P.

I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30

As in other times, this passage refers to Israel falling back into a state of spiritual and moral decline. Though the city’s physical walls had crumbled, God was more concerned about their broken relationship with Him. Sadly, God found no one to stand in the gap to restore the moral or spiritual condition, so they experienced destruction.

When you hear the phrase “stand in the gap”, what comes to mind? This expression dates back to the time of Ezekiel, describing someone who steps up when no one else will, sacrificing their own comfort or safety for the benefit of others. Biblically, it represents a sense of ownership, accountability, and a willingness to carry the burdens of others.

Even now, God is still looking for people to stand in the gap for moral purity, integrity, and faithfulness to the Gospel. We learn from the lives of Moses, Joseph, Daniel, and Nehemiah how our obedience and intercession for those in need makes a difference.

Standing in the gap happens every time we serve the body of Christ or communities around us. It’s using our gifts in any capacity such as preaching, praying, discipling, encouraging, organizing, cooking, crafting, greeting, giving (time and money), worshipping, and writing (like this devotion). It’s listening to what people say and tuning into their unspoken struggles.

Standing in the gap is a call to action. It means that whatever the assignment, we move forward in,

God’s Anointed Power: 1 Corinthians 4:20

God’s Anointed Purpose: 2 Timothy 1:9

God’s Anointed Peace: Romans 14:17

This is the G.A.P.—not a call reserved for church leaders or missionaries, but for every Christ follower. Maybe you feel unqualified or unsure of where to begin. Remember this: you’re equipped with His wisdom and strength.

The world desperately needs people of faith to stand in the gap. The call is out. Will you be the one? Let this be your prayer:

Lord, give me eyes to see the broken people around me and the courage to stand in the gap with Your power, purpose, and peace. Use me for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
