Run to Win

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 1 Corinthians 9:25

The Corinthians immediately understood Paul's sports metaphors because they loved competition as much as our culture does today. But their athletes were only competing for fleeting glory, and only one of them could win. We are racing towards eternal, spiritual glory, but God promises us it's a race we can all win! But remember, we can only win God's race if we're following Jesus... Years ago, when I was younger, I ran the Disney Marathon a few times. The last time I did it, I completed the Disney half-marathon the day before. I already said I was much younger, maybe I was much dumber back then too! I'm thankful God can use our worst decisions and worst moments to teach us biblical lessons.

One of the first lessons I learned concerned the powerful promise of Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." I learned it doesn’t really apply to all situations, that promise is about remaining content in all situations, in good times and bad. I also learned that the dumb choices we sometimes make aren’t usually blessed by God. After I finished those two long races, my legs were so sore I could hardly walk. But in His grace, God protected me and prevented any permanent injury.

Another lesson God taught me was people can say unhelpful things when they’re trying to help. If you’ve ever seen (or ran) a long race in public, many people line the racecourse to watch. While they watch, they will often attempt to cheer the runners and encourage them. But one thing I never liked was people shouting “you’re almost there” when I knew there was still a long way to go. When someone says "you’re almost there" your heart quickens, and your mind starts thinking about the finish line. Then, disappointment hits when you turn the next corner and a long stretch of road lies ahead. Unlike people, our God never disappoints, and He never gives us false hope.

The best lesson I learned is that I could finish the longest race by concentrating on one step at a time. Finishing well is placing one foot in front of the other, and doing it over and over. Life as a Christ follower is a lot like that. We win our spiritual race by continually moving forward. Remember, life is more like a marathon than a sprint. To win, take each step deliberately and be absolutely sure Who you are following!
