Illuminating Darkness

Lord, you light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness. Psalm 18:28 (CSB)

Last week, we considered how God’s light is:

  1. Central to God’s identity
  2. Central to the identity of all believers
  3. The Light for our path (our life)

This week, we'll be examining God's light again. Scripture says we have varying degrees of being filled with God's light, but our goal is to be completely filled with His light.

"Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you." Luke 11:36

Here are some ways to receive God’s light:

Turn to Him

Faith in Jesus is what saves us, but after salvation we are called to seek God and obey Him. If you’ve wandered away from God, turn back to Him. Be restored and allow God's light to replace any darkness in you (Job 22:23).

Meet Him Face-to-Face

God's light will shine on us when we delight in the Lord – when we lift up our face to God and pray to Him (Job 22:26-28). Talk with the Lord. Gaze worshipfully on His face with a genuine, transparent heart. Soak under God's light like you’re soaking in sun!

They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. Psalm 44:3

When scripture talks about someone's “face” it may be referring to their character. Praising God’s character is one way we can draw nearer to God’s face (Psalm 100:4). Meditate on and appreciate God’s character as revealed through His names listed in Scripture.

“Consume” His Word

The Bible is a lamp for our feet and light on our path (Psalm 119:105). That means we should immerse ourselves in scripture daily.

Walk in His Truth

  1. Practice truth and live with a clear conscience before the Lord. This is how we come into the Light (John 3:21).
  2. Guard what you allow to enter through your eyes. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. Matthew 6:22
  3. When we are in right standing with God, His light will shine upon us and within us. (Matthew 13:43).

Love Others

God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:16 (NASB)

God's light will help us love others. When we show God's love to others, we are abiding in God and His light!
