Divine Transitions

“I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. Genesis 46:3-4

This year, my family's holiday season will look different. My son's family moved three hours away for a new ministry opportunity, so Bob and I are pondering our holiday plans. In essence, the change in their world spilled over into ours. Now, we're facing a time of transition. What was is gone, and something new lies on our holiday horizon.

Transitions. We all have them; some are small, others are huge. Some we create, others are out of our control. When a transition happens, it opens a plethora of emotions and questions; we let go of what's comfortable and familiar, and we wrestle with anxiety and the fear of the unknown.

For me, it's easier to move forward when I'm provided with a methodical, detailed plan that is well-organized. Yet, in times of change, in those new seasons of life, that type of information isn't always available. What happens then? How will we react? When we're facing a time of transition, are we able to still "run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1) the book of Hebrews describes?

To successfully embrace transition, we must completely trust God's promises. Here are a few to get us started:

  1. God will go before us (Deuteronomy 31:8). God has prepared the way for our successful transition.
  2. God will straighten out the difficult paths for us (Proverbs 3:5-6). If we submit ourselves to Him, He will guide our steps.
  3. God will align our hopes and plans with His (Jeremiah 29:11). The Lord loves us unconditionally, and He always has our best in mind.
  4. God will make a way through the "wilderness" for us (Isaiah 43:19). God loves to do new things. When He does, He will help us transition into them.
  5. We must focus on the future, not our past (Philippians 3:13-14). If we're grasping the old ways too tightly, we won't be able to fully embrace the new.

Notice, God's promises cover all of life's possibilities. "God has, God will, and God is..." His promises are personal, and they apply to us right here and right now. Change can be challenging, but we can rest assured that our Almighty God never changes. He will be right there with us in every transition we experience!
