Hold onto the Ball

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23
When I played football, the coach taught us a crucial lesson: "Hold onto the ball." If you drop the ball, you can't run a play, throw a pass, or score a touchdown. We practiced endless drills, and all of them taught us to hold the ball tightly. I remember a game we were supposed to win, but everyone kept fumbling the ball. The running backs couldn't hold it, and the receivers kept dropping it. In the game's final moments, we had one last chance to take the lead. When the coach sent in a pass play, I reminded my teammates: "Just hold onto the ball." No one was open, so I tucked the ball and ran towards the goal line. But right before I scored, a hard hit jarred the ball loose. My fumble ended the game. Lying there heartbroken, I realized I had failed to follow my own instructions; "Just hold onto the ball."
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him... Romans 15:13
The hope God provides isn't wishful thinking—it's a confident expectation, trusting He will fulfill His promises, even when we can't imagine how He'll do it. There are moments in life where holding on is everything, and they are usually not sports related. God gives us something to hold onto spiritually, and it's much more precious than a football—it's His hope! When God's Word says, "hold unswervingly.” He means: don't lose hope when life gets hard, don't fumble when doubts creep in, and don't drop the ball when pressure from the enemy increases. No matter what you are going through in life, hold God's hope tightly.
We hold onto hope by:
- Speaking to God in our Prayers
- Regularly reading His Word
- Meditating on His promises
- Guarding our hearts
We must guard our hearts because the enemy wants to steal our hope and replace it with fear! The main way Satan steals our hope is by getting us to doubt God's promises. Satan knows everything good in your life—your joy and peace, your health and finances, your marriage and children—are connected to your hope in God's promises. If he steals your hope, everything it sustains is affected. That's why holding hope tightly isn't optional, it's essential.
Christ follower, when a problem smacks you down, disappointment blindsides you, or your prayers seem unanswered; Remember that God is right beside you in each of those moments. He's ready and willing to help— all He's asking us to do is "hold onto the hope" He provides!
