The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

Everybody seems to be looking for peace. Self-help is a huge industry that offers books and seminars that promise to provide the secrets behind inner peace. Yet most of the people who purchase these materials are constantly returning to the bookstore! They are constantly searching for new ways to find peace, not realizing peace isn't something we can buy. True peace is a gift, and it's a gift we can only get from God. Some people who lack peace try to calm their minds with drugs or alcohol. Self-medicating with substances may temporarily dull or mask inner turmoil, but it won't be permanent. Inner peace will never be achieved by drugs, counseling, or alcohol. Even worse, chronic misuse of "medication" will ultimately lead to destruction.

Everyone craves peace, but it's often elusive, even for Christ followers. True peace can only be obtained by completely trusting God. The formula He provides is easy to understand, but to put it into practice requires us to totally rely upon the Lord. Total surrender can be difficult, but the choice is ours... Will we choose to remain independent and set our minds on the world's solutions? Or will we set our minds on the things of God and cry out to the Holy Spirit for help? Self-reliance may bring temporary pleasure or fleeting improvement, but that path ultimately leads to destruction. To have lasting peace, the kind of peace only God can provide, will require us to sacrificing our will for His.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

That verse from Philippians is a great reminder that the peace God gives us surpasses our human understanding. That means we can't work for or reason ourselves into peace. True peace comes from God alone. That's why self-help books, classes, and seminars are ineffective. When we set our minds on the things of God and totally rely on Him, Jesus will guard our hearts (our emotions) and our minds. Jesus is our best source of peace because He is the Prince of Peace!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Are you ready to trade the world's chaos for God's lasting peace? I know I am! We can get started by making sure we've completely surrendered our will to Jesus!
