…I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life. John 8:12 (NASB)
Have you ever noticed how often “light” is mentioned throughout Scripture?
Light is central to God’s identity:
- God is light (1 John 1:5).
- God is the Father of all light (James 1:17).
- God wraps Himself in light (Psalm 104:2).
- Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12).
Light is central to the identity of believers:
- We are “children of Light,” (1 Thessalonians 5:5).
- At salvation, God made His light shine in our hearts (2 Corinthians 4:6-7).
- God made His light shine in us so we could be "the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14).
God’s Word is the Light for our path:
- Scripture illuminates our path through life (Psalm 119:105).
- The unfolding of God’s words enlightens us and gives understanding (Psalm 119:130).
- The teaching of God’s law “is light” and His commandments are our “lamp” (Proverbs 6:23).
Jesus challenged us to follow Him, and when we do, He said we'd have "the light of life" (John 8:12). Natural sunlight gives life by offering growth, strength, illumination, and healing – God's light offers eternal life by providing some of those same things.
God’s Light:
- Reflects and radiates His glory (Revelation 21:23).
- Can't be overcome by the world's darkness (John 1:5).
- Exposes darkness and makes evil visible (Ephesians 5:8-14).
- Prevents the darkness from overtaking believers (John 12:35-36).
- Guides unbelievers out of darkness and gives them God's peace (Luke 1:78-79).
The Lord and His Word are our lifeline. Are you abiding in God’s Light?
