God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14
“I AM” -it seems simple, yet considering Who God is, it almost appears to be an understatement. In His wisdom, the Lord knew Moses couldn’t understand everything about Him. In Moses defense, God has no beginning or end, so He can't really explain all that He is to created beings like us. In context, God was telling Moses that He would be enough for Moses to complete the mission He was being assigned.
Let's reflect on the characteristics of the great I AM:
- God is eternal.
- God is sovereign.
- God is self-existent.
- God is self-sufficient.
- God is incomprehensible.
This is not an exhaustive list of all that God is, but it does give us a glimpse of His majesty. It also lets us know that as His children, we have everything we need to live confidently and victoriously. Just as God had a plan for Moses, the great "I AM” has a plan for all of us!
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
God may not give us as many details as He gave Moses, but His assurances are the same:
- He will help us find contentment in Him alone (Philippians 4:13)
- He will never leave or forsake us. (Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5)
- He will instruct us and teach us the way we should go. (Psalm 32:8)
- He will supply all our needs, according to His riches. (Philippians 4:19)
Are you facing a daunting trial? Do you have a seemingly impossible need? Be assured, God has known about before you were even born. The only thing that is new is that God is allowing you to glimpse part of His plan.
"No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you." Joshua 1:5
There are things only God can do, and there are other things that WE must do:
- Seek the great I AM!
- Read God’s Word every day.
- Pray (talk) to God throughout your day.
- Cultivate a personal relationship with Him.
- Seek a better understanding of who God is.
Live confidently! Expect God to empower you to do His will. After all, the great I AM is more than enough!
