Wisdom Calls Out

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks. Proverbs 1:20-21 (ESV)
Proverbs pictures wisdom as a woman shouting in the streets. It's a symbolic figure of speech that helps make wisdom come alive. But wisdom isn't a person; it's the mind of God revealed through His Word.
Wisdom "calls out" to us by giving us instructions, and we find many of them in the book of Proverbs. In Hebrew, wisdom is best translated as applied knowledge—knowing how to act, speak, and respond in everyday situations. Proverbs often start out with a speech from a father to his children. This paints a picture of our Heavenly Father speaking to His sons and daughters, speaking to us. Proverbs also instructs us to make the pursuit of Godly wisdom and the fear of the Lord our highest priorities.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
The Proverbs help us discover the source, value, and benefits of Godly wisdom. In them, our Heavenly Father tells us to pay attention, listen closely, and seek advice from other believers. Proverbs is full of divine wisdom, and a lot of it comes from the insight God gave His people throughout generations. The wisdom found in Proverbs helps us live a life that honors God and respects others.
Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 8:34-35 (ESV)
God’s Wisdom:
• Prolongs our life (Proverbs 3:2).
• Purifies our heart and soothes our soul (Proverbs 2:10).
• Teaches us to have a healthy fear of God (Proverbs 1:7).
• Helps us live in peace, safety, and security (Proverbs 1:33).
• Separates us from the ways of the wicked (Proverbs 2:12-13).
• Helps us stay on God's path of righteousness (Proverbs 2:20).
"Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise." Proverbs 1:23 (NLT).
Don't overlook Proverbs! It's verses, concepts, and principles will help you learn how to apply God's wisdom to every area of your life, no matter what season of life you are in. It's a guidebook we can return to time after time, giving us Godly wisdom for the rest of our lives!
Though we live in a fallen world, God’s treasure trove of wisdom continues to "call out" to us. Are we listening?
