What Are You Thinking?

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Psalm 119:37

There is a connection between what we think about and what we become. The psalmist asked God to help him not waste time looking at (and thinking about) worthless things. He knew right thinking leads to right living, and sinful thinking leads to sinful actions. Eventually, sinful actions result in a lifestyle of sin. Anyone who sins repetitively and willfully is moving further and further away from God. What we think is crucial to how we live—the choice is ours!

When our minds are full of sinful thoughts, we are being controlled by the enemy. But when we have a spiritual mindset, it moves us towards God. When most of our thoughts are spiritual, we aren't controlled by the enemy, we’re under the influence of The Holy Spirit! Most spiritual battles aren't physical, they are won or lost in our minds. Be careful, our world bombards our minds with ungodly thinking—some of it is obvious, but some of it is deceptively subtle. Most people don't plan to move away from God; they are led there by inappropriate thoughts from the enemy.

These four fundamental R’s will help us control what we think about:

  1. Remember that life is a constant spiritual battle. Satan is constantly attacking our minds. His is always trying to get us to doubt God so we’ll miss out on the victorious life Jesus promised. (John 10:10).
  2. Recognize any wrong thoughts. When you feel anxious, afraid, doubtful, or ungrateful, those thoughts aren’t coming from God, they are coming from the enemy. (2 Corinthians 11:3)
  3. Reject those wrong thoughts. It’s a choice God wants us to make, and He will help us make it. When Satan tempted Jesus, He fought back with God’s Word. The sword of the Spirit is our best weapon. (Ephesians 6:17)
  4. Replace ungodly thoughts with godly ones. Letting your car idle for extended periods of time isn’t good, and it’s not good for our minds to be idle either. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

Our minds are a battlefield, and our thoughts are the weapons—our thinking is either for God, or for Satan. Make it your goal to set your mind on the things of God. Treasure God’s Word in your heart, it’s your greatest weapon to repel enemy attacks. Satan may attack our minds, but God promises us the victory!

...because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. I John 4:4

Christ follower, always think about what you are thinking!
