Correcting in Love

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)

Speaking truth can be hard, especially to someone we love. It's especially hard when we know they probably won’t take it well. When we confront someone with truth and they reject it, blame others, or get angry, it can leave us feeling hurt, upset, and brokenhearted. Even when we know God prompted us to speak to them, it’s still hard... at least it is for me. Confrontation makes most of us uncomfortable, but when God leads us to speak truth in love, He's doing it for a reason. Stepping out in faith and speaking God's truth may draw someone closer to God. Speaking truth in love is biblical, so we should worry less about how it makes us feel, and more about the outcome God is orchestrating.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17

Jesus never wavered from speaking truth. The people He dealt with either accepted His correction or chose to walk away. Throughout the Bible we see kings, pharaohs, and rulers of nations reject God's truth. Some of Jesus' closest followers had a hard time accepting all of God's truth. After hearing it, some of them walked away and did their own thing. It broke Jesus' heart when His followers rejected Him, and I'm sure it breaks His heart when people reject Him today. But when He faced strong opposition, Jesus "stayed the course" of His mission.

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10

Are you struggling to correct someone in love? Or have you already corrected someone and it didn’t go well? If that's you. I encourage you to read Ephesians 4. It is an amazing chapter, one where Paul encourages us to live in unity with each other. Growth as believers encompasses our Christian maturity, stability and integrity. Growing in Christ means learning how to speak truth in love. and how to be kind, compassionate and forgiving.

Being more like Jesus will probably make us uncomfortable. Speaking truth in love isn't easy, but when God asks us to do it, He's using us to expand His kingdom!
