Worth More Than Gold

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. James 1:2-3
Several years ago, the world cheered as Gabby Douglas earned a gold medal in gymnastics at the Summer Olympics. When the gold medal was placed around her neck, I remember the pure joy that emanated from that perky 16-year-old. It took years of hard work and sacrifice, and it included being separated from her family. Those sacrifices were overshadowed by the joy she experienced as she attained her goal of winning the Olympics. There were probably times when she thought about giving up, but the hope of victory fueled her passion. In those times of failure, fatigue, and frustration, she kept her eyes focused on the prize. That gold medal may have symbolized her victory, but to me, the discipline and character that developed as she trained is her greater achievement.
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14
When the apostle Paul penned these words, he was using a sports analogy to illustrate a biblical principle.
Paul knew the pathway to winning “the prize” (heaven) would be marked by trials and suffering. But through it all, he considered it well worth the effort and sacrifice. Do we feel the same way?
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11
God knows that faith that isn’t tested can’t be trusted. He also knows a time of testing strengthens us. It may sound strange, but trials are designed to increase our trust in God. Here's some practical advice for your next trial:
- Pray first. Acknowledge you need God, then trust Him to accomplish what you cannot.
- Run towards God, not the other way. See your next trial as opportunity to draw closer to God.
- Worship God. Demonstrate your faith by thanking Him for who He is. See your trial as a vital part of His greater plan.
- Remember, our hope is in God alone. Our greatest source of help is Him! (Psalm 121: 1-2)
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8
Christ follower, the crown of righteousness you're racing towards is more valuable than Olympic gold!
