A Foundation of Faith

They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. Luke 6:48
Recently, someone built a new house right behind ours. A strong foundation is an essential part of building a house, and it's important it is built right. I'm not a contractor, but it didn’t look like it was being built properly when I saw them pour the foundation after dark! We were surprised to see some workers holding flashlights so the others could smooth out the fresh concrete. Next, the workers began to lay cinderblock for the walls. I was startled when I saw them digging the tightly packed dirt away from the foundation to make a hole for keeping their drinks cold. At the end of their day, they only used loose, unpacked earth to refill that hole underneath the foundation.
To last, houses must have a firm foundation. After what I saw, I'm fairly sure that house will have cracks in its foundation. Every new house settles a bit, but if they shift too much, tile laid on a cracked foundation eventually cracks too. I also hope our frequent Florida storms don't saturate the ground enough to wash away that unpacked dirt. When a foundation is improperly built, it leaves the entire house vulnerable to unnecessary damage.
But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:49
Like our houses, we must build our lives on a firm foundation. When the storms of life hit, a firm foundation of faith won't crack! Life's storms are difficult, but when our foundation of faith is properly built, it will remain solid. But a strong faith requires much more than a superficial belief in God. Strong faith comes from knowing why we believe what we believe. Reading, studying, and applying God's Word to our lives is how we strengthen our faith. Talking to God daily (in prayer) is how we build on our faith's foundation. Everyone's faith gets challenged, but when it's built right, the strongest storm can't weaken it.
But the demands of a busy schedule can pull us away from God's Word, and Satan loves to send distractions to interrupt our prayers. Therefore, we must be intentional about spending time with God. Christ follower, be aware of your enemy's schemes, and build your faith on a firm foundation!
