But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
It's easy to admire the physical strength, emotional toughness, or mental resilience of others. But when we see a weakness in ourselves, we don't consider it admirable... we might even feel like a failure. We often try to hide our weaknesses, but the truth is, we all have them.
In the past, one of my weaknesses was impatience, and it occasionally made me act ungodly. When I was a young airman in the ER, one of my duties was training other staff members to perform tasks like drawing blood or putting on a cast. But after I trained them, if it took them too long to complete their task I would jump in and finish it for them! My impatience frustrated my co-workers so much it eventually led to animosity. My behavior was wrong, and I knew it... But I hid my weakness until the Holy Spirit showed me a surprising truth: weakness is not something to hide; it's a doorway to God's power!
The Apostle Paul knew what it meant to have weaknesses, and he wrote about it in 2 Corinthians 12:9. Paul was a spiritual giant, but he eventually faced something he couldn't fix. In other verses he called it a "thorn in the flesh," and whatever it was, the struggle to overcome it kept him humble. The Lord didn't remove Paul's weakness because it was accomplishing a godly purpose: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in (your) weakness." God used Paul's weakness to teach him to always rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.
Christians usually view their weaknesses as liabilities. We don't want to seem weak, so we don't admit we're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or exhausted. But God never told us to pretend we have it all together when we don't! The Lord works most powerfully after we acknowledge our dependence on Him. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says complete dependence on God is the key to overcoming our weaknesses.
Christ follower, don't hide your weakness! Whether you avoid confrontation, have insecurities, are easily angered, procrastinate, or have poor time management, admit them and give them to God. A complete dependence on God will drive you deeper into His grace. Remember, The Lord doesn't despise our weaknesses, He wants us to admit them so He can work through them!
Don't try to hide your weaknesses, admit them and give them to God.
