Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place... Ephesians 6:14
The belt of truth is a critical part of our spiritual armor, and being truthful is a virtue Paul constantly emphasizes. In Ephesians 4 Paul says Christ followers must get rid of falsehood after salvation (stop lying) because we are now part of the body of Christ.
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. Ephesians 4:25
If you think about it, we have a choice to remove one of two things. We can either take off our falsehood, or we can take off the belt of truth. God's Word has examples of people who took off the belt of truth, and one of them is Abraham. In Genesis 12:11-13, Abraham lied to the Egyptians when he said Sarah was his sister. He even asked Sarah to go along with his lie. Sarah was his half-sister, so maybe Abraham viewed his statement as a half-truth. But Abraham's intention was deception, which made his half-truth a whole lie! Abraham continued his deception by repeating this same exact lie to another pagan king in Genesis 20.
...she really is my sister, for we both have the same father, but different mothers. And I married her. Genesis 20:12 (NLT)
Both times, Abraham thought his situation was hopeless. He thought he would be killed because Sarah was so beautiful. The lies he told were a big problem, but they weren't the root of Abraham's problem. Abraham's real problem was he didn't completely trust God. Like Abraham, being untruthful is only a symptom. The real illness is not trusting God.
In Genesis 26, Isaac feared for his life due to his wife’s beauty too. To "fix" a situation he viewed as impossible, he repeated the same lies his father told! But remember, both men are heroes of our faith. This shows us how easy it is to compromise our integrity. We all make mistakes, but we can't ever compromise our integrity out of fear.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
Since God doesn't give us fear, that means our fears come from our flesh and the enemy. Satan repeatedly tempts us to lie because he knows when we do, we're taking off God's belt of truth. Christ follower, keep your belt of truth buckled! It's a vital part of your spiritual armor and keeping it on means you completely trust God!
