Proper Priorities

..."few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42

Life is full of options. Some choices are clearly poor, but others are a bit more ambiguous. Some of the things we do appear to be good choices, but are they really the best choice we could make? The story of Mary and Martha is a great reminder that what matters most in life is spending time with Jesus.

I must confess, some of the choices I've made seemed good at the time, and they definitely weren't anything sinful. Some of them were even praised by others because I was choosing to serve others. But as I look back on them now, I realize that many of my choices lacked a critical element... I wasn't focused on putting Jesus first in every decision.

For example, I've offered to serve at church events, and I knew those events were good choices. But at the time, I was a lot like Martha. I was so focused on serving Jesus that I wasn't setting aside time to spend with Jesus. Staying busy eventually led to exhaustion, and I got so tired I wasn't hearing from the Lord. So, my "good" choice wasn't the best choice! It eventually began to affect me spiritually. Now, I realize it happened because my priorities were off! Sound familiar? Has something similar ever happened to you?

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

When our good works begin to limit our quiet time Jesus, it's time to reassess our priorities. Some of you may need to choose to be more like Mary and less like Martha. After all, scripture tells us to serve God, but it never says to place serving Him above spending time with Him. Writing this devo is convicting me to closely re-examine my life and my schedule again to make sure everything's still in balance. Will you join me?

Make JESUS your priority! Everything else can wait.
